Our first afforestation project entered the second phase this spring, the main objective was to plant another 2 hecare of land with 10,000 acacia seedlings.
In order to achieve it, we intended to plant the trees togheter with volunteers, local supporters and forestry specialists. We initiated 2 events called “Let’s plant trees!”, an impresive number of 150 volunteers answered our call to make a change in a small village of Transilvania.
Unfortunately both our events had to be canceled due to worsening wheather conditions. As the “window” for planting was closing and the planting could not be delayed, we chose to implement the project with the help of a team of forest specialists. Planting on time and thus allowing the seedlings to make the most of the spring and grow strong acacia trees. The planting took place on 22nd of April, exactly the day of Earth Day, a wonderful way to celebrate Earth!
At the moment, we have completed afforestation of the 3 ha of land in Laslaul Mare, Mures County, a total of 15,000 seedlings have been planted. In the following period we will carry out various maintenance works that will be extended for a period of at least 3 years.
Also this spring, we managed to have the first results concerning the 5,000 trees planted in 2014. A big percentage of the seedlings survived after the winter time. Now we just need to help them to grow by making different maintenance activities, which we briefly mention below.
DIGGING – work that helps loosen the soil; it is executed at the ground surface by using the screed. This helps to ventilate the soil, prevents moisture loss and helps take away the plants that can suffocate the seedlings.
COMPLETION – dry seedlings that did not survive the weather are replaced with new seedlings.
DECOPLESIREA – the action of removing weeds that shade and suffocate the seedlings in summer and in winter, being lying down, the thick snow completely covers them. This work is performed in early summer (June), using sickle or selective chemicals.
Join us, whether as a volunteer or as a simple supporter, all you have to do is pass on the information about our association!
These activities will be carried out largely with forestry specialists, but we are still looking for volunteers who are interested in joining us. Those who wish to get involved can email us: info@cleanwood.org
